How this generator works

Built from what you pick, priced as you go

Most CLAUDE.md generators hand you the same generic template regardless of what you answer - a wall of boilerplate you have to trim yourself. This one only adds a section once you've given it something real to put there: skip the commands step and there's no Commands section at all, and the live count next to each one shows exactly what that choice cost before you commit to it.

The section split follows the same discipline as CLAUDE.md best practices, judged by token cost - only standing rules a fresh session always needs belong in the file at all. For the same estimate on a file you already have, paste it into the CLAUDE.md Token Counter, or run the free scan below for your real, per-project number.

Generator FAQ

About the wizard and the estimate

Is the token estimate the same as the CLAUDE.md Token Counter?

Yes - same heuristic (about 4 characters per token for prose, 3.2 for fenced code) and the same current/legacy tokenizer toggle, so a file built here reads the same number if you paste it into the counter afterward.

Why does it ask about my package manager and test runner?

So the Commands section carries a real, working invocation for your setup - pnpm build, uv run pytest, go test ./... - instead of a generic placeholder like "npm test" that may not even be the command your repo uses.

Does this replace path-scoped rules or skills?

No, on purpose - it only ever generates standing sections a fresh session always needs. Anything conditional (a workflow that only applies sometimes) belongs in a path-scoped rule or a skill instead; see CLAUDE.md best practices for where to move it.

Can I edit the file after generating it?

Yes. It's plain markdown - copy or download it and edit freely. Nothing is saved anywhere; the whole wizard runs in your browser and forgets your answers on refresh.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is UsageCut really free?

Yes. The scan and every fix are free - no card, no subscription, no signup. You only give an email if you want the optimization plan and one-command undo sent to your inbox.

Is my code safe? Does UsageCut upload anything?

The scan runs entirely on your machine. It never uploads your code, never reads your API key, and never sends your prompts or conversations anywhere. Only anonymous summary counts leave, and only if you choose to share them.

How does it reduce Claude Code token usage?

It reads your local setup and session history to find waste - idle MCP servers loaded into every session, an oversized CLAUDE.md re-sent on every request, duplicate file reads, and bloated tool output - then trims it losslessly, so each session carries less context and you hit your limit far less often.
